The Sims 2

The Sims 2 is a strategic, life simulation game devloped by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts.

So, what does The Sims 2 add that couldn't be found in the original game? In The Sims 2 your Sims will age through 6 distinct life stages: baby, toddler, child, teen, adult and elder. Unfortunately, beyond this point you will have to part with your Sims as they pass away. As your Sims age, you will want to try and get them to forge relationships and start families of their own. As your family grows, each Sim will have their own recorded family tree.

Beyond the statistical form of family relations, children carry on the traits and appearances of their parents, so should you have a couple with ginger hair and who produce offspring, you will end up with an entire family of Sims with ginger hair. The detail of virtual DNA goes far deeper than hair colour, of course!

The most obvious thing you will notice about the game is that it is entirely three dimensional. No longer are your Sims living in a flat 2D world. The graphics are vastly improved, and with the new 3D engine comes a more advanced building engine.

Along with buying objects to satisfy your Sims' needs, you now have to manage your Sims' wants and fears. These are determined by their Aspiration which you choose: Romance, Family, Knowledge, Popularity and Fortune. A Sim with the Romance aspiration will want to flirt with someone, and will fear being rejected for kiss for example. Once a Want is satisifed, your Sim will gain Aspiration Points which can be spent on special "award" items, such as the Elixir of Life which extends a Sims life span. A new Want will automatically replace to previous accomplished Want. A Sim's Wants will also change every time they wake up or return home from work. If a Fear is satisifed, your Sim will lose a number of Aspiration points.

The amount of Aspiration points at each age transition also determines how long the Sim will live. So, while The Sims 2 has no real goals, there is a new level of strategy involved in balancing a Sim's life during a limited time in which to fulfill aspirations, meet needs, progress in a chosen career and start a family.

That pretty much sums up The Sims 2! There are also a range of Expansion Packs which can be added onto the game for new experiences for your Sims. Use the menu at the top of the page to find out more.

  • The game was released on 14th September 2004.
